Game Cameras
Here you'll learn how to view photos from the team's trail cameras, add a new camera, and configure the camera to send photos to Jaktli automatically.
How does it work?
Each camera in Jaktli gets a unique email address. When the trail camera sends an email with a photo to that address, the photo lands in the app automatically.
The latest 50 photos per camera are kept. When a new photo arrives, the oldest is removed. Messages in Jaktli's inbox are also cleaned up after import so the same photo isn't fetched twice.
Add a camera
If the team has no camera yet, the Game Cameras page shows an Add camera button straight away. Once cameras exist, the button lives under the cog Manage cameras in the top right.
Every member except read-only members can add cameras.
Read-only member
Read-only members can see this but not change it. See Members.
- Tap Add camera at the top of the page
- Enter a name (e.g., "North feeding place") and an optional description
- A unique email address is generated and shown under Send photos to this address
- Tap Copy address and paste it into the camera's settings (see the next section)
Configure the camera to send photos
Most trail cameras can send photos by email. The setting is usually called SMTP, Send by email, or similar; check the camera manual for the exact name.
Fill in:
- Recipient address: the email address you got from Jaktli (paste from clipboard)
- Sender address: the camera's own email address or any text (some cameras require this)
- Server (SMTP): usually from the camera's mobile operator, e.g.,
smtp.gmail.com - Port: 587 or 465 (the camera usually suggests the right one)
No SMTP password from Jaktli
You don't need a username or password from Jaktli. The email address from Jaktli is all you need. Enter it as the recipient. The SMTP username and password are the camera's own email login.
Send a test photo
Send a test photo from the camera before you leave it out in the field. If the photo doesn't appear in Jaktli within 15 minutes, check the recipient address and the camera's signal.
Share a camera from Molnus
If your cameras are in the Molnus service, you do not need to change anything inside the camera itself. You share the camera to the Jaktli address instead.
- Add the camera in Jaktli and copy the email address (see the section above)
- Sign in to Molnus
- Select the camera and share it by email to the address you copied
- Wait a few minutes
Molnus first sends an email asking for the sharing to be approved. Jaktli approves it for you automatically. You do not have to find that email and press any button. Once it is approved, every new photo from the camera arrives in Jaktli, just like from a camera that sends email itself.
Check back after a while
Approval can take up to 15 minutes. The first photo arrives when the camera takes its next picture. If nothing has arrived after a day, check that you shared to the right address.
Other services
Right now Molnus is the only service approved automatically. If you use another service that asks for approval before it forwards photos, get in touch and we will add it.
Does your camera service refuse to forward the pictures? The EU Data Act gives you the right to have the camera's data sent wherever you choose. See EU Data Act.
Edit camera
You can change the name and description of a camera you created. Tap the pencil icon next to the camera name. Administrators can edit all cameras.
View photos
The Game Cameras page shows one row per camera with the camera's name, when the latest photo was taken and the newest photos. Scroll sideways to browse the photos. Tap View all to open the camera with every stored photo. A small orange dot on a photo means you have not looked at it yet. The dot goes away once you have opened the photo. The dots are yours alone; everyone in the team has their own. If you have many new photos, tap Mark all seen at the top to clear every dot at once. A camera's own page has the same button, but there it only covers that camera.
At the top of the page you can choose between By camera and All photos with the two small buttons. All photos shows the photos from every camera together, newest first, with the camera's name on each photo. When you open a photo you can browse on through all the photos. In By camera view the Sort button sets the order of the cameras: Recently added, Latest photo or Name. Your choices are kept for next time.
The cameras themselves (name, description, email address) are managed under the cog Manage cameras in the top right.
When a new photo arrives, the whole team gets a notification on their phone. If you'd rather not get it, turn off Game cameras under notifications in your profile. See Profile.
- Tap a photo in the row, or View all to open the camera with every photo in a grid
- Tap a photo to view it full-screen
- Swipe left or right to browse
- Pinch to zoom in
- Tap Save to photos to save the photo to your phone's photo library
Photos are shown with the newest first. The order follows when the photo was taken, according to the camera's email, rather than when it arrived in Jaktli. In full-screen, each photo shows the date and time it was taken.
Save a photo to the team gallery
Camera photos disappear once the latest 50 have been replaced. To keep a photo for the whole team, save it to the team gallery. Any member can do this.
- Open the photo full-screen
- Tap the picture-with-a-plus icon in the top right
- The photo appears in the gallery with the camera's name as its caption
The gallery gets its own copy of the photo. It stays even if the camera later removes the photo, or the camera is deleted. Each photo can only be saved once. If you try again, a message tells you it is already in the gallery.
Send a photo to a chat
You can send a camera photo straight to one of the team's chats, for example to show what game walked past.
- Open the photo in full screen (on a computer: hover over the photo)
- Tap the speech bubble
- Choose the chat, add a few words if you like, and tap Send
The chat gets its own copy of the photo, so it stays even after the camera has replaced it with newer ones.
Delete a single photo
The person who created the camera, or an administrator, can delete a single photo. Open the photo full-screen and tap the trash icon in the top right. The photo is removed for the whole team and cannot be restored. Save it to your phone's photo library first if you want to keep it.
Delete several photos at once
This works both on a camera's own page and in the view with every camera's photos (the grid).
- Tap Select, next to Mark all seen above the photos. You can also hold your finger on a photo for a moment.
- Tap the photos you want to delete. A selected photo gets a tick and a green frame. In the all-cameras view, photos from cameras you may not change are greyed out.
- Tap Select all to pick every photo shown.
- Tap Delete at the bottom and confirm.
Tap Cancel in the top left if you change your mind.
Link to a map marker
A camera can be linked to a map marker of type Trail Camera. The latest photo then appears on the marker, and you can tap View on map in the camera detail screen to jump there.
Linking is done when creating or editing a map marker. See Map.
Move a camera to another team
If you belong to several teams, you can move a camera you added yourself. Only the person who added the camera can move it, not the team's administrators.
- Open the camera
- Tap Move to another team and pick the team
- Confirm
The camera keeps its email address, so nothing needs to change on the camera itself. Every photo that arrives after the move goes to the new team.
The photos do not follow
The photos already stored are removed when the camera is moved. The old team no longer sees them and the new team does not receive them. Photos saved to the old team's gallery stay there. Save important photos to the gallery before moving.
Delete a camera
The person who created the camera, or an administrator, can delete it. If the camera is linked to a map marker, you can choose:
- Remove camera, keep marker: the marker stays without a camera link
- Remove camera and marker: both go
Deletion can't be undone
All saved photos from the camera are permanently removed. Save important photos to your phone's photo library first.
