Your tracker, your camera, your data
Most dog trackers and trail cameras lock your data in. The dog's tracks live only in the vendor's app, and the pictures only in the camera service's cloud. Switch apps, or watch the vendor shut the service down, and the data is gone. For a year now there has been an EU law that changes that. It is called the Data Act, and it gives you a right to your own data.
What the law says
The Data Act has applied across the EU since 12 September 2025. It covers connected products: things that collect data about how they are used and can send it on. A tracking collar that sends the dog's position over the mobile network is such a product. So is a trail camera with a SIM card.
The law gives you three things:
- The right to know what data the product collects, before you buy it
- The right to get the data yourself, free of charge and in a format a computer can read
- The right to have the data sent straight to someone else you choose, for example Jaktli, at no cost to you
The vendor may not make it difficult, and may not force you to stay in its own app. Since 12 September 2026, new products must also be built so that this is easy from the start.
What it means for your team
Today Jaktli can show dogs from the trackers we support, and soon from a spare phone and from open GPS collars. Dogs on a tracker that lives only in the vendor's own app we cannot show, because the vendors do not release the data.
We are actively working to set up collaborations with those vendors, and we will keep at it. But you do not have to wait for us. With the Data Act you can demand yourself that your vendor sends the dog's positions to Jaktli. The more people who ask, the easier our conversations get.
The same goes for trail cameras. If your pictures sit in a cloud service that will not forward them, you can demand it.
We do the same ourselves
We think this is right, so we follow the same principle. The Jaktli OpenTrack app, which turns a spare phone into a tracker, can send the dog's positions to a server of your own choice instead of to Jaktli. Only the phone's own positions are sent, nothing from Jaktli comes along. And you can always download your own data in Jaktli from your profile.
How to do it
We have gathered everything on one page in the handbook: what the law gives you, what it does not, which vendors are covered, and ready-made letters in Swedish and English that you just fill in and send.
- Open the letters in the handbook
- Copy the letter that fits and fill in your product
- Email it to the vendor's customer service
- Give them 30 days, and remind them if they do not answer
